Satiation refers to the condition in which the effectiveness of a reinforcer decreases due to its frequent use or exposure. When a person or animal has had enough of a particular item or event, the motivation to engage in behavior that leads to that reinforcement diminishes. In essence, as an individual continually experiences a reinforcer, the pleasure or desire associated with it lessens, which in turn reduces its effectiveness as a motivator for future behavior.

This understanding aligns with the notion that reinforcement is more powerful when it is varied and not overly repeated. Excessive exposure can lead to a state where the reinforcer no longer holds the same appeal or power it once did, hence diminishing its potential to reinforce desired behaviors.
